SoFi Technologies (NASDAQ:SOFI) shares surged 8.1% to $16.47 in Tuesday afternoon trading, as investors digested a robust second-quarter earnings report that saw revenue guidance raised while profit targets remained unchanged. The stock's rebound has nearly erased the post-earnings slump, leaving it just 1.6% below its pre-report closing price of July 28.
The fintech's shares have been on a rollercoaster since the July 29 earnings release, initially dropping 6.3% before staging a recovery. Tuesday's rally brought trading volume to 78.27 million shares, approaching the three-month average of 79.52 million, as market participants weighed the company's strong operational performance against its cautious profit outlook.
Strong Q2 Results, But Profit Guidance Holds
SoFi reported adjusted net revenue of $1.2 billion for the second quarter, a 40% year-over-year increase that surpassed analyst forecasts of $1.12 billion. Adjusted EBITDA climbed 44% to $358 million, reaching an all-time high, while GAAP net income of $156.6 million marked a 61% improvement. Adjusted EPS of $0.12 beat expectations by a penny.
Loan originations surged 69% to $14.8 billion, and membership grew 35% to 15.8 million, both setting records. CEO Anthony Noto emphasized the strength of the consumer, noting, "Spending remains strong, demand remains strong, and credit performance continues to meet or exceed our expectations."
Segment Breakdown: Lending and Financial Services Lead
The Lending segment generated $711.7 million in revenue, up 59% year-over-year, accounting for 56.4% of the listed segment total. Financial Services contributed $466.3 million, up 29%, representing 36.9%. The Technology Platform was the outlier, with revenue declining 23% to $84.5 million following a major client departure before 2026.
This concentration underscores the company's reliance on its balance-sheet and consumer-facing businesses. The recovery is driven by strength in these core areas rather than a rebound in the technology platform, which remains a drag on overall performance.
Guidance: Revenue Up, Profit Flat
SoFi raised its 2026 adjusted net revenue guidance to $4.75-$4.85 billion, above the analyst consensus of $4.7 billion. However, the company left its adjusted EBITDA forecast at approximately $1.6 billion and adjusted EPS at about $0.60, providing little indication of accelerating operating leverage. Member growth guidance of at least 30% was confirmed.
This mixed guidance has created a debate among investors: can the company convert its rapid growth into meaningful profit expansion, or will rising credit costs and funding expenses erode margins?
Analyst Sentiment Mixed
Wall Street remains divided on SoFi. Of 21 analysts surveyed, seven rate the stock a Buy, 11 recommend Hold, and three suggest Sell, with an average price target of $22.83. Recent actions reflect this uncertainty: Truist raised its target to $18 (Hold), Goldman Sachs to $21 (Neutral), while Citigroup and Citizens JMP maintain Buy ratings with $30 targets. JPMorgan upgraded to Overweight with a $31 target.
The stock currently trades 49.7% below its 52-week high of $32.73, with a trailing P/E of 34.86. Market capitalization stands at $21.13 billion.
Risks and the Path Forward
The accelerated balance-sheet expansion could boost income but also raises credit risk. Weaker consumer conditions, higher funding costs, or reduced loan sale activity could pressure profits. Additionally, challenges within the Technology Platform segment introduce execution risk.
The key challenge for SoFi is clear: it must translate its higher revenue outlook into earnings that exceed the steady $0.60-per-share estimate. With the market's attention fixed on second-half profitability, the company's ability to manage costs while sustaining growth will be critical.
