Net income — the bottom line — is the ultimate measure of a company's profitability. It represents the total profit remaining after subtracting all costs, expenses, interest, and taxes from revenue. Companies with the highest net income are generating the most actual profit for their shareholders.

The top net income producers tend to be mega-cap companies with either high margins (technology, pharmaceuticals) or massive scale (energy, banking). Apple consistently leads U.S. companies in net income, generating close to $100 billion annually. Financial institutions and energy companies also rank highly due to the sheer volume of their operations.

This list ranks companies by absolute net income in dollars, along with revenue, profit margin, and P/E ratio. High net income with a low P/E suggests the market is undervaluing the company's earnings power. Financial data is from the most recent annual reports, updated weekly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is net income?
Net income is a company's total profit after subtracting all expenses from revenue, including cost of goods sold, operating expenses, interest, taxes, and depreciation. It appears at the bottom of the income statement, which is why it is called the "bottom line." Net income is the starting point for calculating earnings per share (EPS), the P/E ratio, and return on equity. Positive net income means the company is profitable; negative net income means it is losing money.
What companies have the highest net income?
Apple typically leads all U.S. companies with net income approaching $100 billion annually. Microsoft, Alphabet (Google), and Meta generate $20-80 billion each in net income. Among non-tech companies, Berkshire Hathaway, JPMorgan Chase, and ExxonMobil are consistent top earners. The technology sector dominates because high margins on digital products produce extraordinary profitability at scale.
Is high net income always good?
Generally yes, but context matters. A company can temporarily boost net income through one-time events like asset sales, tax benefits, or accounting changes that are not repeatable. Declining net income despite growing revenue signals margin compression, which could indicate competitive pressure or rising costs. Also compare net income to cash flow from operations — if net income significantly exceeds operating cash flow, earnings quality may be low.
What is the difference between net income and EBITDA?
Net income includes all deductions: operating costs, interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization. EBITDA adds back interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, showing earnings from core operations before financing and accounting decisions. EBITDA is useful for comparing companies with different debt levels and tax situations. Net income is the more conservative and complete measure of actual profitability.
What is earnings per share (EPS)?
EPS divides net income by the number of outstanding shares, showing the profit attributable to each share. If a company earns $10 billion with 2 billion shares, EPS is $5.00. EPS is the foundation of the P/E ratio and is the most watched metric during earnings season. Diluted EPS accounts for stock options and convertible securities that could increase the share count. Growing EPS drives stock price appreciation over time.
Why do some large companies have low net income?
Large companies can have low net income relative to their revenue if they operate in low-margin industries (retail, automotive, airlines), carry heavy debt (high interest expense), have large depreciation charges from capital-intensive operations, or are investing heavily in growth at the expense of current profitability. Some companies with enormous revenue generate modest net income because their business model requires massive scale to work.
What is return on equity?
Return on equity (ROE) divides net income by shareholder equity, showing how efficiently a company uses invested capital to generate profit. An ROE of 20% means the company earns $0.20 for every $1.00 of equity. Companies with high net income and high ROE are particularly attractive because they are creating substantial value per dollar invested. However, high ROE can be inflated by excessive debt — check the D/E ratio alongside ROE.
