This list ranks publicly traded companies by total annual revenue — the top line that shows how much money flows through a business each year. The highest-revenue companies are economic powerhouses whose operations span global supply chains, millions of customers, and multiple industries.

Revenue size does not always correlate with market cap or profitability. Some of the highest-revenue companies operate in low-margin industries like retail, energy, and healthcare distribution, where thin margins on massive sales volumes produce the bulk of revenue. In contrast, high-margin technology companies may generate less revenue but far more profit per dollar of sales.

This list includes revenue, net income, and profit margin to show how efficiently each company converts sales into profit. Financial data is from the most recent annual reports, updated weekly. Companies with $1 billion or more in market cap are included.

Frequently Asked Questions

What companies have the highest revenue?
The highest-revenue public companies in the U.S. include Walmart, Amazon, Apple, UnitedHealth Group, and ExxonMobil. Walmart consistently leads with over $600 billion in annual revenue from its global retail operations. Energy companies like ExxonMobil and Chevron see revenue fluctuate with oil prices. Technology companies like Apple and Amazon generate massive revenue while also maintaining higher profit margins than retailers and energy firms.
Is high revenue the same as high profit?
No. Revenue and profit are fundamentally different metrics. Revenue (top line) is total sales; profit (bottom line) is what remains after all expenses. Walmart generates over $600 billion in revenue but operates at thin margins of 2-3%. Apple generates roughly $380 billion but keeps 25%+ as profit. The relationship between revenue and profit is captured by profit margin. High-revenue, low-margin companies need massive scale to generate meaningful earnings.
Why does revenue matter for investors?
Revenue matters because it reflects the size of a company's business operations and demand for its products. Revenue growth is the ultimate driver of long-term earnings growth — companies cannot indefinitely grow profits without growing sales. Investors track revenue trends to assess market share gains or losses, industry demand, and pricing power. A company with declining revenue faces an uphill battle regardless of how efficiently it manages costs.
What is the difference between revenue and market cap?
Revenue measures the total money flowing through a business from operations. Market cap measures the total value the market assigns to the company's stock. Some high-revenue companies have modest market caps (low-margin retailers), while some moderate-revenue companies have enormous market caps (high-growth tech). The ratio of market cap to revenue is the price-to-sales (P/S) ratio, a common valuation metric.
What sectors generate the most revenue?
Retail, energy, and healthcare generate the highest total revenue because their business models involve high-volume, lower-margin transactions. Walmart alone exceeds $600 billion. Healthcare companies like UnitedHealth and CVS generate hundreds of billions from insurance premiums and pharmacy sales. Technology companies generate less total revenue but convert it more efficiently into profit. Financial services revenue comes from interest income, fees, and trading.
What is revenue per share?
Revenue per share divides total annual revenue by the number of outstanding shares. It is used in the price-to-sales ratio and helps normalize revenue comparisons across companies of different sizes. A company with $10 billion in revenue and 1 billion shares has $10 revenue per share. Tracking revenue per share over time shows whether growth is being diluted by share issuance or amplified by share buybacks.
How is revenue different from income?
Revenue is the total amount earned from sales before any deductions. Income refers to profit after subtracting costs — gross income subtracts cost of goods sold, operating income subtracts operating expenses, and net income subtracts everything including taxes and interest. Revenue tells you how big the business is; income tells you how profitable it is. Both metrics are reported on the income statement in quarterly and annual financial reports.
