Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) shares closed Tuesday down 0.72% at $336.87, extending a recent slide despite the company moving closer to launching its Cybercab robotaxi service. The stock's decline came amid broader market weakness, with the Nasdaq Composite falling 1.33% as rising Treasury yields pressured growth equities.

The core issue for investors remains scale. Tesla revealed that its paid, unsupervised robotaxi service has accumulated approximately 380,000 miles to date. In stark contrast, Alphabet's (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Waymo operates about 4 million rider-only miles each week. That gap translates to a 10.5-fold difference, with Waymo's weekly run rate surpassing Tesla's cumulative total by a wide margin.

The comparison underscores a critical challenge for Tesla's robotaxi ambitions. While Cybercab production capacity is substantial — Tesla says its Texas facility can build over 125,000 units annually — revenue generation depends on utilization rates and the accumulation of safe, unsupervised miles. Tesla's 380,000 miles represent only about two-thirds of what Waymo covers in a single day.

Cybercab Launch Details

According to a Reuters report citing The Information, Tesla has informed employees that it could launch Austin rides for staff as soon as this month, with public operations potentially beginning days later. The company has been testing production Cybercabs on public streets since June. The vehicle, which lacks a steering wheel and pedals, relies on full autonomy, teleoperations, and fleet support. This design means a restricted employee rollout serves as a practical operating trial rather than a confirmation of commercial readiness.

Waymo maintains a clear operational lead. It operates in 10 cities with paid rides, compared to Tesla's six-city unsupervised footprint. Waymo has logged 500,000 paid rides weekly and 4 million rider-only miles since March. Tesla reported almost 2.5 million paid miles by the second quarter, but only 380,000 were unsupervised.

Regulatory and Financial Hurdles

Regulatory approvals remain a key variable. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently granted Amazon's (NASDAQ:AMZN) Zoox an exemption for up to 2,500 custom vehicles annually over two years. Tesla maintains its Cybercab meets current federal regulations, setting it on a separate path, but state and local approvals continue to be significant.

Financially, Tesla's heavy spending on AI infrastructure and manufacturing is straining cash flow. In the first half of 2026, capital expenditures reached $8.28 billion, up from $3.89 billion a year earlier. Operating cash flow of $8.63 billion barely covered that spending, leaving just $352 million in free cash flow after capital outlays. Second-quarter revenue rose 26% to $28.24 billion, but net income attributable to common holders fell about 5% to $1.11 billion.

Analyst Views and Market Outlook

Morgan Stanley analyst Andrew Percoco said a higher level of confidence hinges on “clearer evidence that Robotaxi is scaling,” pointing to the need for more vehicles, increased urban density, a rise in unsupervised miles, and improved unit economics. He noted the Cybercab launch only meets the first requirement.

Wall Street's price targets show an unusually wide spread. MarketBeat's average forecast of $402.24 implies a 19.4% upside from Tuesday's close, with targets ranging from $25.28 to $600. The wide divergence reflects differing expectations for autonomy adoption and execution.

Investors should watch for weekly disclosures of unsupervised mileage, trips per car, and earnings per mile. Until those numbers show meaningful growth, Cybercab remains a capacity story under a utilization challenge.
