Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ:SMCI) shares catapulted 12.6% to $28.70 in premarket trading on Monday, as the company's preliminary fourth-quarter results revealed a significant margin improvement that is reshaping investor expectations in the AI hardware sector.

The server and storage solutions provider now expects fourth-quarter revenue to be approximately $11 billion, with gross margins projected in the range of 15% to 17%. This marks a sharp increase from the previous guidance of 8.2% to 8.4%. At the midpoint of the updated margin and sales outlook, gross profit would reach $1.76 billion, representing a $847 million, or 93%, increase over the prior midpoint.

This margin expansion comes as a welcome surprise to investors who had been grappling with concerns about the sustainability of AI-related spending. The company disclosed over $60 billion in new orders for the quarter, more than 5.4 times its minimum sales figure, though a portion of these orders may be subject to cancellation or postponement.

The market reaction was not uniform across the AI hardware space. Shares of Hewlett Packard Enterprise (NYSE:HPE) edged up 1.1%, while Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) slipped 1.2% and Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) fell 2.1%. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:SOXX) dropped 1.8% in early trading, and Nasdaq 100 futures declined 0.6% as of 7:02 a.m. EDT.

Analysts at JPMorgan Chase (NYSE:JPM) indicated that the margin boost could drive quarterly earnings per share at least 80% higher than current consensus estimates. However, they expressed caution regarding the sustainability of the elevated margins, noting that the preliminary results are still unaudited and subject to revision.

Senior analyst Ipek Ozkardeskaya highlighted that a reduction in spending by Big Tech could trigger "another wave of selling" in the semiconductor sector. This sentiment was echoed by the market's focus on upcoming earnings from Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL), which traded unchanged at $347.67 ahead of its Wednesday report. Investors are seeking evidence that significant capital expenditures on AI are translating into concrete returns.

Super Micro also continues to assess potential export-control matters, and its order backlog includes commitments that could face postponement or cancellation. The company is scheduled to release its final fourth-quarter results on August 11, providing a clearer picture of its financial health and the trajectory of its margin improvement.

The broader market context remains cautious, with oil prices near $95 per barrel adding to inflationary pressures. The semiconductor sector, which had rebounded on Tuesday, faced renewed headwinds as investors digested the mixed signals from Super Micro's margin reset and the broader implications for AI hardware profitability.
