Shares of Micron Technology (NASDAQ:MU) experienced a notable 12.2% surge on Tuesday, propelling the stock to approximately $968 and adding an estimated $119 billion to the company's market capitalization. The rally, driven by robust demand for memory chips in artificial intelligence applications, has brought renewed attention to pricing dynamics in the semiconductor sector.

The $119 billion increase in market value surpassed Micron's roughly $100 billion in remaining performance obligations from strategic customer agreements. While these figures are not directly comparable under accounting standards, the disparity underscores investor confidence in the company's ability to capitalize on supply constraints beyond existing contractual commitments.

Micron's fiscal third-quarter results highlighted the impact of pricing power. Revenue surged to $41.46 billion, with consolidated gross margins expanding to 85% from 38% in the prior year. Adjusted free cash flow reached $18.3 billion, reflecting strong operational performance. The company attributed most of the growth to higher average selling prices rather than increased shipment volumes.

In terms of product segments, DRAM revenue climbed 343% year-over-year, with average selling prices rising in the low-260% range while bit shipments grew in the low-20% range. NAND revenue increased 361%, with prices up in the mid-310% range and shipments in the low double-digit percentages. These figures underscore the extent to which pricing has driven revenue expansion.

Looking ahead, Micron projected fiscal fourth-quarter revenue of $50 billion, with a possible variance of $1 billion, and an anticipated gross margin of approximately 86%. The outlook reflects expectations that tight supply conditions will persist, a view echoed by Chief Executive Sanjay Mehrotra, who anticipates tight conditions to continue beyond calendar 2027.

The rally extended to other memory stocks, with Sandisk Corp. (NASDAQ:SNDK) advancing 14.3% and Western Digital Corp. (NASDAQ:WDC) rising 12.5% on Tuesday. The PHLX Semiconductor Sector index (INDEXNASDAQ:SOX) gained 5.2%. However, on Wednesday, Micron dipped 0.3% while Western Digital rose 1.6% and Sandisk was unchanged, with the chip index climbing 1.1%.

Micron's relative underperformance on Wednesday has shifted investor focus to Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL), which is set to report second-quarter earnings after the close. According to CFRA strategist Sam Stovall, the magnitude of Alphabet's capital expenditure spending will be central to market sentiment, as it signals the pace of AI investment.

Bank of America Corp. (NYSE:BAC) analyst Vivek Arya reaffirmed a Buy rating on Micron with a price target of $1,550, representing approximately 60% upside from current levels. However, risks remain, including historical memory price volatility, potential increases in industry supply, and a slowdown in AI-related spending that could pressure profit margins.

Despite the recent gains, Micron remains roughly 20% below its record closing price set on June 25. Tuesday's surge recouped only about 30% of the decline from that peak to Monday's low. The sustainability of the rebound may hinge on signals from Alphabet's capital expenditure plans, which could provide further insight into the trajectory of AI-driven demand.
